  1. Hi Kunal,

Found your blog through Indiblogger. It is wonderful to see your debut novel doing so well. Your promotions through FB etc. is also very impressive.

I am working on the first draft of my first novel. I have a complete outline and have written a third of the first draft.

My question? At what stage should I start any promotional activity? I was considering starting something now itself. Is that a good idea? Also, could I contact publishers now to get inputs, or do they only consider looking at complete manuscripts?

Thanks so much for the information that you are sharing!

    Good luck with your writing.

  2. Hi Shankari,

Let me tell you a bit in detail:

There are two kind of publishers in the industry - First one are the likes of Rupa, penguin, Harper Collins etc., who usuall take a year to respond and prefer already published and well known authors. They are stringent on the quality though. On the other side, there is another breed of publishers who will publish anything provided they receive a support from author to promote it. First you need to decide which kind of publishers you want to go with as a first timer.

    1. To send your manuscripts to the publishers, all you require is first 3 chapters, your synopsis, and a short biography of yours. Start sending them now only to the big publishing houses first. You never know if they like your story and give you a chance to get published.

    2. Yes, I would suggest start promoting the book now only. Before that make the video trailer ready. Make a Fan Page, a intriguing cover page, and a twitter handle. If possible make a blog with the name of the book and start posting some best picked excerpts from the book.

Wish you all the very best with your upcoming book. May you get a huge success with it.

    1. Hi Siddhant,

If you ask me, few best publishers in order will be:

      1. Westland
      2. Penguin
      3. Hatchette
      4. Random House
      5. Harper Collins
      6. Rupa
      7. Roli Books
      8. Srishti
      9. Vitasta Publishing

There are several other publishers which might not be as good as these but are equally good in giving chance to new authors. Few of them include Mahaveer Publishers, Diamond Publications, Grapevine India, Grey Oaks, Expression Publications, Prakash Books, Pustak Mahal etc.
